2014 Palisade Regional Risk Conferences: Best Practices in Risk and Decision Analysis
Palisade Risk Conference Amsterdam Draws Large
and Diverse Delegation

Attracting over 100 delegates, Palisade’s first 2011 Risk Conference was held in the historic West Indische Huis in Amsterdam on the 29th and 30th of March.  The event was attended by professionals from industries as diverse as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, insurance, healthcare, engineering, and banking, and consisted of over 35 presentations and training sessions divided into three tracks. The conference was opened by Palisade president Sam McLafferty and vice president Randy Heffernan. Sam presented an overview of Palisade and previewed what is coming next in future versions, and Randy discussed the importance and need for probabilistic analysis in today’s business climate. Over the course of the two days this was followed by over 35 presentations, including plenary discussions by Frank Lyhne Hansen, Leader, Enterprise Risk Management at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and by Andrew Evans, Decision Analyst at Unilever.  Mr. Hansen spoke about the various ways PwC uses Monte Carlo simulation and other techniques in approaching a range of business problems, and Mr. Evans presented a variety of useful ways to remove bias from decision-making.

In addition, case studies were presented by dozens of companies and organizations, including Mott McDonald, DNV, ARCADIS, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, and many others.  The case studies were as diverse at the delegation itself, covering how to deal with risk in banking, energy, project management, and other disciplines.  Lastly, as ever, the software training and presentations by Palisade staff on @RISK and DecisionTools Suite tools, customized software solutions, and best practices in modeling were very popular.

Delegates also found time to relax at a networking cruise through the city followed by dinner at the award-winning Five Flies restaurant.
