Stanford University Press Publishes New Text on Entrpreneurial Finance Featureing DecisionTools Software

Stanford University Press Publishes
New Text on Entrepreneurial Finance
Featuring DecisionTools Software
Stanford University Press has released an important new textbook in the rapidly expanding field of entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurial Finance: Strategy, Valuation, and Deal Structure by Janet Kiholm Smith, Richard L. Smith, and Richard T. Bliss. The new title is unique in its application of quantitative, probabilistic analysis to tackle the enormous uncertainties facing any new venture.

The authors specifically address the influences of risk and uncertainty on new venture success. They devote substantial attention to methods of financial modeling such as Monte Carlo simulation and decision trees, available in the industry-leading analytical software package DecisionTools Suite from Palisade. One component of the Suite, PrecisionTree, is explicitly used to construct decision tree models, and another, @RISK, can easily be applied to the Monte Carlo analysis models in the book. An educational version of The DecisionTools Suite is available to students via the book’s companion Web site.

@RISK Powerful software that is easy to use. It’s a
hard combination to find. Trial Versions

Palisade is happy to showcase professors who implement our tools into their teaching. This month we would like to introduce you to Jürgen Koblitz from Zittau/ Görlitz University of Applied Sciences

German University Shows Versatility
of @RISK Software

Palisade’s @RISK software is designed to be applied to a limitless number of applications.

But we continue to be impressed with the new ways that professors make use of our software.

Take the example of Professor Jürgen Koblitz, a 25-year veteran of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

Koblitz teaches a special statistics course for students in the Housing and Real Estate Management Program.

In his course, Koblitz shows his students how to use @RISK software to:

  • Analyze the rents of flats in different regions.
  • Look at customer satisfaction in areas such as shopping centers.
  • Investigate decisions about solar plants.

Koblitz was using a different software package but sought out a program that could seamlessly integrate into Excel and was less complicated to use. He found the perfect fit with @RISK. Koblitz is also looking at using another Palisade product, NeuralTools, for classifications in regional statistics.

The use of @RISK is not surprising considering the forward-thinking educational traditional of Zittau/Görlitz University.

The towns of Zittau and Görlitz are both steeped in tradition with a focus on education, science and art.

In 1992, the school was founded as a twin-campus university, with locations in Zittau & Görlitz, Germany. Previously, both cities had their own respective universities. However, after German reunification, it was decided to unite the schools into one.

Teaching Tips & Examples

The DecisionTools Suite is a great way to present quantitative techniques in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. Each month we feature an example or tip illustrating how students can gain "real world" benefits by implementing quantitative analysis.

To Buy or Lease to Own or Charter
Excerpted from @RISK Bank Credit and Financial Analysis by Roy L. Nersesian, published by Palisade

A common decision faced by managers is whether to buy or enter into a short-term lease for equipment or to rent office space on a long or short-term lease. A short-term lease may be at a lesser rate, but a manager must worry about what happens when the lease expires such as replacing equipment or finding new office space. Moreover, the rate for a new short-term lease to replace the equipment or obtain new office space is not known. This worry can be avoided by entering into a long-term lease. But this also has its drawbacks. The equipment may become obsolete during the lease period. The equipment or the office space may no longer be needed or adequate to serve the needs of the company. These are imponderables in deciding whether to enter into long or short-term leases, but @RISK is designed to handle imponderables.

Textbook of the Month

The DecisionTools Suite is included in dozens of major textbooks, and is a key component of more titles every year. Authors use the DecisionTools Suite to illustrate key analytical concepts and build examples demonstrating the value of quantitative techniques in business, OR, and engineering.

Essentials of Modern Business Statistics with Microsoft Excel, 4th Edition
By David R. Anderson; Dennis J. Sweeney; Thomas A. Williams

From the renowned author team that has been writing market-leading business statistics textbooks for more than 20 years, this book provides a brief introduction to business statistics that balances a conceptual understanding of statistics with the real-world application of statistical methodology. Microsoft Excel 2007, is integrated throughout the text, showing step-by-step instructions and screen captures to enhance student learning. The fourth edition contains the same student learning features that have made ASW products best-sellers for years, including the problem-scenario approach and real-world examples that introduce statistical techniques. The latest DecisionTools Suite software is utilized and included with the text as well.

Professors, PhD candidates, practitioners and others often use the DecisionTools Suite as part of a complex analysis to address important problems. These analyses are published in white papers. Each month we will feature a different academic white paper addressing a wide range of issues.

Monte Carlo Simulation-based Supply
Chain Disruption Management for

By Shilan Jin and Jun Zhuang, Industrial and Systems Engineering,
SUNY at Buffalo; Zigeng Liu, Wisconsin School of Business,
University of Wisconsin-Madison

In this paper, we integrate supply chain risk management with a government-terrorist game conducted in war zones (such as Afghanistan and Iraq). The equilibrium outcomes of wargames depend on the government’s resources delivered through military supply chains, which are subject to disruptions such as natural disasters and terrorism. We study the government’s optimal pre-disruption preparation strategies, including inventory protection and capacity backup protection. Considering the uncertainties (e.g., the outage length of a disruption and the level of resources available to the terrorist), we conduct Monte Carlo simulation experiments to numerically investigate the benefits using our disruption preparation strategies compared with other strategies.
