Live Web Training: New Low Cost, More Topics

Launched six months ago, Palisade’s live web training program has been very successful. More and more professionals in a variety of industries are finding that learning how to effectively apply @RISK and DecisionTools software need not be time-consuming, inconvenient, or expensive. With Palisade web seminars, attendees learn from their desks, interact with the instructor, and “take home” quality instruction notes and examples after the course.

Palisade live web training seminars are conducted in 4-hour blocks, so decision makers from coast-to-coast can fit a course into their schedule. In addition, new shorter course offerings mean there is an option for every budget. A variety of topics — from beginning to advanced to special focus — mean there is a course for virtually everyone who needs to assess risk and make decisions on the job.

Using VBA Macros with @RISK is a new course introducing users of @RISK for Excel to simulation efficiencies that can be achieved by writing macros in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a programming language built into Excel.

Using the @RISK Developer's Kit is a new class focusing on the @RISK programming toolkit and teaches how to apply Monte Carlo simulation and @RISK features to applications outside of Excel. Examples will include network risk applications which can be deployed over the web.

NeuralTools Applications
NeuralTools can be applied in virtually any instance where there are relationships between predictor variables (data you know or can obtain) and predicted variables (the unknown information you seek).

Neural Networks analysis tools are used in a broad range of applications, including credit and loan risk assignment, credit fraud detection, sales forecasting, general business forecasting, investment risk, medical diagnosis, scientific research, and control systems.

Cornell and @RISK Help LCRA Manage Water

Effective water resource management is a challenge in most regions, but in hot and arid Central Texas, water supply affects every person, farm, and business. The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) manages water supplies for municipalities, farms and industries along a 600-mile stretch of the Texas portion of the Colorado River which includes the state capital, Austin. In a unique partnership, Cornell University Operations Research students collaborated with the LCRA to develop a water supply model using Palisade’s @RISK software.

The Water Management Challenge
The LCRA’s challenge is to predict the amount of water available for low-priority agricultural use contracts while ensuring that municipal, industrial, and other firm water needs are met. Inflow and rainfall are uncertain, as is high priority municipal and industrial consumption. Additional uncertainties - like loss due to evaporation - must also be factored into the equation.

Cornell’s @RISK Solution
The Cornell students used @RISK’s Monte Carlo simulation capability to predict the amount of water available and the probabilities of different amounts occurring. This tells the LCRA how much water is available to contract for agricultural uses each year.

Palisade’s @RISK was at the heart of the model. @RISK handled all the uncertainties, dealt with the variations, and delivered clear results. According to Mark Jordan, Manager of River Management at the LCRA, "As demands on our river increase, LCRA is always looking for more efficient ways to manage the water supply. This research shows the potential of new methods."
