E-Focus: @RISK 5.7 and DecisionTools Suite 5.7 Academic 64-bit
@RISK 5.7 and DecisionTools Suite 5.7
Academic 64-bit Now Available

We are pleased to announce the release of @RISK 5.7 and DecisionTools Suite 5.7 academic versions, with full compatibility with Excel 2010, both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. Now all academic versions, including those bundled with textbooks and all course licenses, are compatible with 64-bit Excel.

Many students are coming into school with 64-bit Office 2010 installed on their laptops. 64-bit technology enables Excel and DecisionTools products to access much more computer memory than ever before. This allows for much greater capacity for large models.

In addition, all products in DecisionTools Suite 5.7 have now been fully translated into Chinese. The new Chinese version is in response to growing demand for DecisionTools analytics in Asia.

Teaching Tips & Examples

The DecisionTools is a great way to present quantitative techniques in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. Each month we feature an example or tip illustrating how students can gain “real world” benefits by implementing quantitative analysis.

Simulating a New Product:
The Hippo Example

Excerpted from
Financial Models using Simulation and Optimization by Wayne Winston, published by Palisade

When a company develops a new product, the profitability of the product is highly uncertain.  Simulation is an excellent tool to estimate the average profitability and riskiness of new products.  This example illustrates how simulation can be used to evaluate a new product.

Textbook of the Month

The DecisionTools Suite is included dozens of major textbooks, and is a key component of more titles every year. Authors use the DecisionTools Suite to illustrate key analytical concepts and build examples demonstrating the value of quantitative techniques in business, OR, and engineering.

Stress Testing State Budgets under Alternative Business Cycle Scenarios
Appeared in State Tax Notes Vol. 56 (May 3, 2010) written by Ray Nelson, Associate Professor of Finance, Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University

States are suffering their worst budget crises since the 1940s, with record drops in tax revenues. To improve long-term budget planning, states must test proposed budgets against a range of possible economic scenarios. By simulating a variety of potential business cycles, one can assess their impact on state budgets. In this study, @RISK is used to facilitate stress testing, through Monte Carlo simulations of revenues and expenditures.
