Thomas E. Burke, Ph.D., PMP
Dr. Tom Burke is a strategic thinker and an effective leader with 40 years of experience in industry, government, and consulting. He has held leadership positions in general management; program management; engineering management; strategic planning; systems engineering; and business development.
He has developed realistic and insightful strategic plans for commercial and defense lines-of-business and has managed the transition from strategy to execution on a number of projects throughout his career. These projects run the gamut from multi-hundred million dollar development projects to small studies; from state-of-the-art electronic systems to enterprise-level software; and from start-up efforts to mature projects.
He is a horizontal thinker—he thinks "outside-the-box" and has a deep understanding of industry, technology, and market trends. Dr. Burke brings experience from consulting (Deloitte Consulting LLP and BearingPoint), industry (TRW Space & Defense and TRW Automotive). Before joining TRW, he served five years at the Central Intelligence Agency and seven years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
He earned a B.A. magna cum laude in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology. He completed the “Executive Management Program” at UCLA; “Management of High-Technology Companies” at Stanford University; and BearingPoint’s Leadership-II program at Yale. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE); and the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS). He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). In 1998, he was elected to membership in the Cosmos Club, Washington, DC, for his contributions to space science.
