European Investment Bank recommends
@RISK to determine feasibility of railway
capital investments

In order to continue providing a viable transport system, Slovakia-based Slovak Rail Company faced the need to replace end-of-life rail cars with new double-deck electric or diesel units. However, a key risk in undertaking this task was that the dwindling passenger numbers opting for rail travel would result in revenues not being high enough to warrant the investment in new carriages. The Slovakian Ministry of Transport, Ministry for Finance and the SRC, all of whom were to co-finance the project with the EU regional finance fund, required a risk-based methodology to be used before it committed to going ahead with the project. Palisade’s risk analysis software, @RISK, was recommended by the European Investment Bank for the task of modeling potential train travel over the next 30 years. The EU Commission also confirmed that the SRC could use this method of decision support to determine whether investing in new rolling stock was feasible. @RISK was used to estimate potential revenues and to calculate the socio-economic impact of increased rail use.

New Book Uses DecisionTools Suite
Entrepreneurial Finance: Strategy, Valuation, and Deal Structure
By Janet Kiholm Smith, Richard L. Smith, Richard T. Bliss

Entrepreneurial Finance is a new book from Stanford University Press that applies the theory and methods of finance and economics to the rapidly evolving field of entrepreneurial finance. This approach reveals how entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and outside investors can rely on academic foundations as a framework to guide decision making. Unlike other texts, this book prepares readers for a wide variety of situations and problems that stakeholders might confront in an entrepreneurial venture. The authors specifically address the influences of risk and uncertainty on new venture success. The book appeals to a wide range of teaching and learning preferences. To help bring the book to life, simulation exercises appear throughout the text that can be used with @RISK. The text also uses PrecisionTree to build decision trees for options evaluation.

Working together to mitigate risk
Monday, May 9, 2011 by DMUU Training Team
A UK aid review recently launched by ex-Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown, says more lives could be saved by faster UK response times to natural disasters. Estimating an increase in the number of people hit by disasters over the next four years from 250m a year to 350m a year, Ashdown is keen to improve local resilience in at-risk countries, and help make the leadership of international responses better and more integrated.

Yuri Raydugin, P.Eng, MBA, PhD, Principal Consultant at Risk Services & Solutions, Inc. points out that project management practitioners recognize the need to consider “unknown unknowns” in project risk management. Risk and the Cost of Debt
Friday, April 22, 2011 by Holly Bailey
Recently a great deal of public attention has focused on economic efficiency in the health care industry, but one rarely mentioned element of overall efficiency is the financing of hospitals. Although many hospitals are nonprofit, even these need operating capital, and an infusion of capital usually is accompanied by financial risk. A recent article in Becker's Hospital Review highlighted the importance of financial risk analysis in the process of choosing sources of credit, and its observations should ring true for any business, for-profit or not.

Case Study
World Conservation Union puts DecisionTools
to work for endangered species

From the Channel Island fox to an African antelope called the gerenuk, it is a diverse group of endangered animals that Palisade’s @RISK and PrecisionTree are working to protect. The popular tools have been introduced to scientists and veterinarians by the IUCN-World Conservation Union’s Conservation Breeding Specialist Group. They are used in the group’s ongoing workshops to help conservationists identify and analyze the risks of disease in their efforts to protect endangered animals.

What makes the group’s use of @RISK and PrecisionTree unusual is that, while many businesses and researchers use Palisade software to deal with mountains of information, the conservationists use it to compensate for a lack of information.

“What we needed,” says Dr. Douglas Armstrong, one of the leaders of the Conservation’s Breeding Specialist Group, “was a set of practical, comprehensive, broadly applicable tools to anticipate what the problems might be. @RISK and PrecisionTree are really key components in that set of tools. They are easy to learn, and they allow us to enter reasonable ranges of possible values rather than fixed estimates. It’s an effective approach to minimizing the risks of disease in our efforts to conserve endangered species.”

Product Spotlight
Saving Simulations
@RISK gives you multiple options for saving simulations you have run and comparing them with other simulations.

These include:

  • Storing simulations in your Excel workbook
  • Saving simulations as a separate .RSK5 file outside the workbook
  • Using the @RISK Library for storing and comparing different simulations.

When you want to store simulation results and graphs, @RISK allows you to keep all data in your Excel workbook. This makes it easy for you to give simulations to others, without worrying about sharing a separate simulation file. However, if you want to store the simulation results in a separate .RSK5 file in order to reduce the file size of the Excel workbook, you have that option, too.

@RISK Save Options Dialog

When a simulation is saved in your workbook, all data and graphs are stored and will be automatically opened the next time you open the workbook in Excel with @RISK running.

You can also use the new Application Settings command in the @RISK Utilities menu to specify the default location where you wish to store your @RISK data.
