  Institutional Investment Policy Development Using @RISK

Matt Rosenberg
RoseCap Investment Advisors

» Download the presentation

Presentation will show how @RISK is used by RoseCap Investment Advisors during the creation of an investment policy statement for use by institutional investors (i.e. Foundations, Endowments, Pensions, etc.). This includes forecasting of cash flows from the institution using various @RISK distribution functions, while assessing the overall risk to the institution through simulation. The result is the establishment of investment guidelines that will provide the institution with the highest probability of achieving its financial goal(s).

  Lessons from two case-studies: How to Build Accurate and Decision-Focused @RISK models

How do you develop and build accurate @RISK models? What distributions should you use? Should you include correlations in your model, and if so, what is the best way to do this? How to best present results to support decisions?

The objective of this session is to help answer the previous questions in a practical manner using the following two real-life case studies:

  1. Business development @RISK model for a specialty chemical company;
  2. Optimizing exploration of large oil company
Real-life @RISK example models will be shown during this presentation.

We examine a model schedule that represents a fairly realistic development of a microelectronics board. The goal is to emphasize the importance of decision making in light of simulation results which would be bery different if compared to deterministic data alone.

We will cover the deterministic (single point) MS Project plan estimate and how a typical Work / Dedication = Duration (also Work x Rate = Cost) scenario is modeled. We'll then compare and contrast the deterministic approach with a Monte Carlo simulation approach by applying commonly used input distributions (Pert and Triangular) to tasks with varying and uncertain durations. The effects of correlating appropriate inputs on critical and non-critical path branches will also be covered. Lastly we will explore the Probabilistic Gantt chart and effect on the Critical Path.
