Palisade General Manager Craig Ferri, will open the conference by giving a brief overview of Palisade. He will then address the questions you’ve undoubtedly been faced with: “What is risk analysis, and why do I need it?” After all, risk management appears to have failed in many examples, and even now companies are trying to figure out how to grapple with risk and unlock the power of probabilistic analysis. How do we avoid missteps, and how do we make the most of the tools we have for managing the future?
The DecisionTools Suite is widely used in oil and gas exploration, production, and project decisions. For decades, @RISK has helped engineers and finance managers estimate unknown reserves, value new projects against each other, and craft optimal strategies. PrecisionTree, another tool in the DecisionTools Suite, is commonly used for drilling strategy discussions, production siting problems, and other multi-stage, sequential decisions. RISKOptimizer comes into play when companies need to determine the best “mix” of projects in their portfolio in order to maximize overall returns.
In this presentation, we will demonstrate how @RISK and the DecisionTools Suite can be applied to common types of issues faced by oil and gas producers.
Business growth is crucial to ensure sustainability. In order to thrive in tough times, selection of a product development project has to be thoroughly analyzed. We routinely use @RISK and RISKOptimizer for valuation and selection of product development projects. In this presentation, we examine an application of both tools to optimize production levels of alternative chemical products, subject to a given set of constraints, in order to maximize EBIDTA.
Our approach required the development of a mass balance model for the manufacturing process that produces the three chemicals of interest. The mass balance model was then connected to a discounted cash flow model, and "x" input variable were assigned as random. RISKOptimizer was used to solve for the proportions of the mass balance that maximized EBITDA, subject to the model constraints. Having optimized the relative production levels, we focused on the potential returns from one of the products of interest to stress-test the findings from the optimation study.
Mega projects in the oil & gas industry gradually show the phenomenon of huge cost overruns and schedule delays, with the characteristics of chaos. In order to analyze the tipping point of changing from the disorder state to the order state as could be controlled by the project manager, the risk drivers of mega oil & gas projects were classed into three categories: Complexity, Stressor, and Miscellaneous risks. Based on this classification, two new models of project risk analysis were proposed to calculate contingency: first considering only Complexity and Stressor risks, and secondly only Miscellaneous risks. Meanwhile, the tipping point was brought forth to make effective use of the risk control. Eventually, one case was analyzed using @RISK and DecisionTools Suite to illustrate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed models in this presentation.
