Attracting over 175 delegates, Palisade’s 2012 Risk Conference at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas was a huge success. With more tracks and sessions than ever, the event included an exciting keynote from Intel’s Andre Lowe, a lively round table discussion with a panel of experts, customized software consulting, and networking sessions at the 64th-floor Mix Lounge, affording everyone the best open-air views in Las Vegas.
The Conference offered something for virtually everyone, regardless of industry sector. Professionals attended from industries such as utilities, oil and gas, engineering and construction, aerospace, manufacturing, finance, and many more. In response to growing demand, a new track of sessions was added this year, bringing the total to four tracks and nearly 50 separate sessions.
The Conference was opened by Palisade president Sam McLafferty and vice president Randy Heffernan. Sam presented an overview of Palisade, touched upon key corporate adoptions, and previewed what is coming next in future versions. Building on Sam’s discussion, Randy reviewed the stages companies commonly go through in their journey toward a corporate-level adoption of risk management tools and techniques, highlighting specific case examples along the way.
Over the course of two days this was followed by user case studies on managing supplychain risk, engineering and reliability risks, managing risk in large projects, energy pricing, cost estimation, capital projects, agriculture, renewable energy, investment portfolios, and more. Palisade staff delivered numerous software training sessions using the latest developments, features, and analyses in @RISK and the DecisionTools Suite.
Delegates also took advantage of one-on-one Expert Sessions. Offered by Palisade consultants and technical experts, these hands-on, individualized consulting sessions helped many attendees improve their riskmodels. With over 40 Expert Sessions, many delegates came away with tangible, customized hands-on techniques they could use immediately in their work.
The conference wrapped up with an animated round table panel discussion on the challenges faced by professionals in their journey toward the adoption of risk management practices. Randy Heffernan moderated the highly interactive session, fielding many questions and comments from the audience. Panelist sharing their insight included Patrick Murray of HDR, Basil Stumborg of British Columbia Hydro, Dr. Keith Hornbacher of Hornbacher Associates and the University of Pennsylvania, and Andre Lowe of Intel.
Andre Lowe delivered a plenary address on Holistic Decision-Making at Intel: How One Decision Affects Another within a Company Portfolio. Having worked in many areas at Intel, Andre is now in the decision analysis section and shared his experiences regarding how Intel considers the impact that potential projects – and their risks – have on each other rather than in isolation. Andre explained Intel’s approach in plain language and ran a sample Excel model to illustrate his points, spurring many conversations afterward.
Delegates also found time to relax and exchange ideas at numerous networking sessions and receptions, including the fabulous Welcome Reception at the Mix Lounge.
We’ll see you in 2013!
