Attracting over 100 delegates, Palisade’s 2012 Risk Conference in Sydney offered something for everyone, regardless of industry sector. The event was held at the Hilton Sydney on 29-30 May. Professionals attended from industries such as mining, engineering and construction, oil and gas, finance and insurance, and more. There were dozens of presentations and training sessions divided into three tracks. The conference was opened by Palisade vice president Randy Heffernan. Randy presented an overview of Palisade, both globally and in the Asia-Pacific region, and previewed what is coming next in future versions. He also summarized tangible business benefits to be gained by using probabilistic analysis.
Over the course of the two days this was followed by sessions on managing risk in large project schedules, more effectively estimating costs, planning for insurance, ensuring environmental safety, financial valuation, and more. There were also a number of sessions on how to better think about risk in terms of organizational culture. Furthermore, Palisade staff delivered numerous software training sessions using the latest software techniques.
New this year, delegates took advantage of one-on-one Expert Sessions. Offered by Palisade consultants and technical experts, these hands-on, individualized consulting sessions helped many attendees improve risk models they brought to the conference.
The conference also featured a plenary address by Andrew Kight of Aon Global Risk Consulting on the topic of considering an organisation’s risk appetite in a quantitative way when planning insurance strategies. Mr Kight shared an insightful and humourous discussion accessible to many different audiences.
Delegates also found time to relax and exchange ideas at numerous networking sessions and receptions.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the conference.. As part of my job, I use some other transport modelling software and the conferences for these can be less than exciting. The Palisade conference was hugely enjoyable as well as educational, and well pitched - I like the mix between case studies and software demos such that both beginners and experts can learn something new. I will definitely be at the next one as well as recommend it to others. Very well done by all of the Palisade staff involved in its organisation.”
- Robert Kinghorn, Principal Economist, Parsons Brinckerhoff
“Great conference, have already recommended to colleagues.”
- Chris Logan, Senior Analyst, Marsh
“I found the conference very useful to understand the trends and advances in risk analysis and Palisade software. I also met colleagues with similar interests who I expect to meet again.”
- Fernando Gaggero, Principal Consultant, Director, River Plate Projects Pty Ltd
“The case studies were good.”
- Greg Brady, Commercial Project Manager, SunWater
“It was by far the best industry based conference I have attended for a very long time, as it delivered value right through the 2 days.
In particular, I very much appreciated the way that each of the presenters were able to provide a deep dive into the software in a very accessible manner using a variety of application cases. It’s one thing to have a technically brilliant operator but it’s quite something else to have one who can communicate across all levels as well. This was a highlight of the conference.
Intelligent decision-making is more than a consensus of opinion if a company is to compete successfully. The huge range of opportunities presented by Palisade’s experts in such an accessible manner showed how easily achievable this is.”
- Rod Howes, Six Sigma Australia
“I really took away a lot from it seeing how the software is being used in a practical sense, as well as gaining an understanding of the more advanced functionality and potential uses within my organisation.”
- Sean O’Brien, Project Risk & Opportunity Manager, Novo Rail
“Another good conference – a good mix of case studies, software insights and networking. A valuable 2 days.”
- Jerry Ball, Director, Entity Group Limited
“An excellent conference. Added to my knowledge, corrected misunderstandings, and saw new opportunities. Contacted possible support and peer-review resources.”
- John Pierce, Director, Quality Strategic Decisions
“All sessions were useful, and all presenters were well-prepared.”
- Dr Anne Roiko, University of the Sunshine Coast
