KEYNOTE: David Apgar, Managing Director, Corporate Executive Board
David Apgar is a managing director of the Corporate Executive Board with research management responsibility for corporate treasurers and controllers. He joined the company in 1998 from McKinsey, where he served insurance, reinsurance and capital markets clients as a consultant and engagement manager for three years.
Prior to that, David was responsible for numerous finance company, bank and insurer M&A assignments as a vice president in Lehman Brothers' Financial Institutions Group, and for building a framework for bank security sales as Senior Policy Advisor to the Comptroller of the Currency.
He proposed a debt relief program for Mexico and designed the precursor to interest rate relief Brady bonds as staff economist to Senator Bill Bradley.
David also teaches a course on Risk Management and Development at Johns Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies. He holds an A.B. from Harvard University, an M.A. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from the RAND Graduate School.

El Sr. Hincapié es Ingeniero Industrial de la Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia donde recibió la mención de honor como mejor graduado de su programa. El Sr. Hincapié es Especialista en Ingeniería Financiera de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y actualmente se desempeña como Analista de Financiamiento en Interconexión Eléctrica S.A. Matriz del Grupo Empresarial ISA y mayor transmisora de energía eléctrica en Latinoamérica, encargado de la estructuración de operaciones de cobertura, administración y análisis de capacidad de endeudamiento para el Grupo Empresarial. Antes de ocupar el actual cargo el Sr. Hincapié se desempeñaba como Analista de Riesgos Corporativos para la misma Empresa.
David Edison, Senior Consultant, Forecasting, Moore Stephens Consulting LLP
David Edison graduated in 1993 from the University of Kent at Canterbury with a degree in Actuarial Science before spending his early career with a Lloyd’s of London syndicate. He then worked with two leading firms of consulting actuaries, one in the insurance field, the other in pensions. He joined Moore Stephens in 1998. David has spent the last ten years using @RISK to apply actuarial, statistical and stochastic risk modeling techniques to a range of industries. He is responsible for statistical modeling teams for both Moore Stephens Consulting in London and Moore Stephens Business Solutions in New York, and services clients throughout the world, including Latin America. Of the challenges he has faced in a decade of consulting, the greatest has often been explaining results to non-statistically minded clients and maximizing the benefits that can be gained by presenting modeling outputs using ever-advancing technologies and techniques.
Clayton Graham, CEO, Chaos Group, Inc.
Clay Graham is a management consultant (and CEO) with the Chaos Group, Inc., which focuses on analyzing, evaluating, and developing action plans for a wide variety of companies and governmental entities. Prior to his current undertakings, he was CEO of the upstart laser mapping and engineering firm Aerotec, LLC. Based near Birmingham, Alabama, Aerotec was featured in Forbes magazine. Clay also brings twenty-five years of practical management and leadership experience from the metal finishing industry, including serving as president of the local trade association, director of several national alliances, and sitting on industry standardization and quality committees. Prior to running his own companies, Clay was employed by A.T. Kearney, lnc.
Clay has written and published extensively in the areas of profitability and control, marketing, financial risk, computer integrated manufacturing, and technology. He has been a featured and keynote speaker at many trade association and professional conclaves. Clay has also served as an advisor to the White House and members of Congress in the areas of economics, environmental control, and management strategy.
His formal education includes a B.S. from Purdue, a graduate degree in economics from Roosevelt University, and a graduate degree in business from Northwestern University where he was a NASA Scholar with a concentration in advanced mathematical modeling and large scale computer applications.
Timothy J. Havranek, MBA, PMP, Senior Business Analyst, Triangle Economic Research (An Arcadis Company)
Mr. Havranek is a Senior Business Analyst with Triangle Economic Research He holds a masters degree in Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering. He is certified as a Project Management Professional by the Project Management Institute and has over 24 years of professional experience. Mr. Havranek has more than 12 years of professional experience in quantitative decision analysis, risk analysis, and project management consulting. He also has over 12 years experience directly managing environmental remediation and petroleum engineering projects. He is also the author of the book, Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry.
Fernando Hernández, Principal, InfoMasters
Las áreas de experiencia de Fernando Hernández incluyen banca, finanzas, manufactura, evaluación de proyectos, pronósticos de mercado y precios. Actualmente Fernando posee y opera InfoMasters, una compañía orientada hacia el entrenamiento, consultoría y desarrollo de aplicaciones financieras y de modelos de decisión para compañías financieras y de manufactura, utilizando software de Microsoft Office y de Palisade. Leigh Hostetter, Senior Project Economist, Triangle Economic Research (An Arcadis Company)
Leigh Hostetter specializes in high level data analysis and modeling techniques. She worked in environmental economic consulting for three years, and spent a year as an Equity Advisor on Wall Street before taking her current position with Triangle Economic Research. Leigh’s professional experience includes membership with the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE), presenting research at AERE’s 2004 Camp Resources, and publishing a paper with the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA). She received a B.A. in Economics from Skidmore College in 2002 with highest honors, and was the recipient of the 2002 Weiss Prize for achievement in economic research.
Hanna Huo, Technical Advisor in Dimensional Variation Analysis (DVA), Cummins Inc.
Hanna Huo is a Technical Advisor in Dimensional Variation Analysis (DVA) for Cummins Incorporated at the Research and Technology Center located in Columbus, Indiana. Mrs. Huo holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University. She is the Corporate DVA Program Leader and DVA Subject Matter Expert in DFSS. Mrs. Huo's technical responsibilities include teaching DVA, DVA tool and process development, and providing DVA support and consultation in projects.

Sam McLafferty, President and CEO, Palisade Corporation
Sam McLafferty is Palisade's founder, president, and CEO. He started the company in 1984 with the release of PRISM, a stand-alone Monte Carlo simulation package for DOS on the PC. PRISM later evolved into @RISK for Lotus 1-2-3, and then for Excel. Sam is Palisade's lead developer, with over thirty years of programming experience. He works closely with the technical and sales staff, ensuring that customer feedback is heard. He personally oversees the development and evolution of every one of the fifteen software products Palisade sells. Prior to Palisade, he was a risk analysis consultant.
Don Mettler, Principal, Mettler Consulting, Inc.
Don Mettler has almost 15 years of experience in the consulting industry. After earning a B.S. from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Don joined a financial software firm as an implementation consultant. He then worked for Andersen Consulting and McCall Consulting Group before starting Mettler Consulting in 1998. He has worked with many leaders in a variety of industries, including aerospace, pharmaceuticals, financial services, manufacturing, and technology. Don is skilled at transitioning Excel-based models into corporate wide applications using Palisade software developer kits.
Javier F. Ordonez, MS, PMP, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Maryland, Project Management Program
Mr. Ordonez holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Universidad de Cuenca, Ecuador and an M.S. in Project Management from the University of Maryland. Currently, Mr. Ordonez is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland performing research on infrastructure project risk analysis. He is also registered as a Project Management Professional (PMP).
Martin Pergler, Expert, Corporate Risk and Risk Modeling; Manager, Corporate Risk Special Initiative, McKinsey and Company
Martin Pergler worked for McKinsey first as a general consultant in Chicago, Prague, and Montreal, and more recently as an expert in risk-informed decision making and modeling. He is the manager of McKinsey's worldwide Corporate Risk Special Initiative, which takes a cross-industry sector and cross-functional view of risk and helps clients with risk-informed strategic decisions, as well as risk-enabled financial and commercial management. Prior to joining McKinsey, Martin obtained a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Chicago and was a lecturer there.
Larry Philbin, Prinicipal Engineer, Santee Cooper
Larry Philbin is a Principal Engineer in the corporate Quality and Performance Support group Santee Cooper, the third-largest public electric power company in North America. This group provides a wide range of performance improvement and analysis services to all levels of the corporation. Larry has twenty-nine years of experience in the performance engineering field spanning manufacturing, process, airline, and utility industries. He holds several degrees in industrial organizational psychology and industrial systems engineering.
Dr Michael Rees, Senior Consultant, Palisade Corporation
Michael has 20 years’ of business and finance experience, including roles such as Principal (Partner) at the strategy consultants Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman) and Vice-President of Equity Research at J.P. Morgan. He has worked independently for 8 years, for 6 of which he was retained by Palisade Corporation to act as their Director of Training and Consulting. He is the author of Financial Modelling in Practice: A Concise Guide for intermediate and Advanced Level, John Wiley & Sons, 2008).
His academic credentials include a Doctorate in Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Algorithms, and a B.A. with First Class Honours in Mathematics, both from Oxford University. He has an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD in France, as well as holding the Wilmott Certificate of Quantitative Finance, where he graduated top of the course for class work and also received the Wilmott Award for the highest final exam mark. Michael is based in the UK and speaks fluent French and German.
Andrew Sleeper, General Manager, Successful Statistics, LLC
Andrew Sleeper is a Six Sigma expert and General Manager of Successful Statistics, LLC. Since 1981 he has worked with product development teams as an engineer, statistician, project manager, Six Sigma Black Belt, and consultant. Mr. Sleeper is the author of two books, Design for Six Sigma Statistics and Six Sigma Distribution Modeling, both published by McGraw-Hill Professional Books. Mr. Sleeper holds degrees in electrical engineering and statistics, and is a licensed Professional Engineer. A senior member of the American Society for Quality, he is certified by ASQ as a Quality Manager, Reliability Engineer, and Quality Engineer. He provides customized Six Sigma and DFSS training and problem solving services to companies around the world.
Barbara Tawney, Independent Health Care Consultant
Barb has worked as a healthcare/medical information consultant for the past twenty years. Most recently, she completed a project involving hospital patient load, flow, and trends for the nine Richmond metropolitan hospitals. She was also instrumental to a project to forecast the activity load for the Find Family staff of Louisiana during the recovery efforts from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Barb is a Ph.D. candidate and holds degrees in Master of Engineering Administration from George Washington University, Master of Engineering in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a B.S. in Engineering Mathematics/Computer Science, also from the University of Virginia.
Thompson Terry, Consultant, Palisade Corporation
Thompson Terry is a dedicated member of Palisade’s training and consulting staff. With ten years of experience at Palisade, including eight in technical support, he is recognized as an expert in all Palisade software products and their applications.
Thompson has led numerous regional training seminars on risk and decision analysis and provided customized onsite training in a variety of industries including insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, defense, and food safety. Clients Thompson has trained include: The Hartford, Unilever, Duratek, Eastman Chemical, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, National Rail (UK), RWE Thames Water (UK), National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago, Stone & Webster, Boeing, and Northrop-Grumman.
Thompson is also on the board of directors of a local credit union’s not-for-profit, community development investment fund. He holds a BS in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University with specializations in economics, marketing, and finance.
Hreinn Thormar, President, Planning & Management Services, Inc. (PMSI)
Hreinn Thormar is President of PMSI, a project delivery firm specializing in capital program and project solutions. Hreinn is an international expert in project delivery, program & project management, project controls and scheduling, risk management, and claims and construction management. He received a B.S. in Manufacturing & Management from Odense University, College of Engineering, Denmark in 1985.
Erik Westwig, Software Engineer, Palisade Corporation
Erik Westwig received his B.Sc. in 1991 and M.Sc. in 1994 from the applied and engineering physics department at Cornell University. In 1998 he published the book, Mathematical Physics with co-author Bruce Kusse, which was just re-released in its second edition. Since 1995 Eric has worked as a software engineer at Palisade as part of the DecisionTools Suite development team.
Major Ernest Yat-Kwan Wong, Analyst, United States Military Academy
Major Wong is an assistant professor with the United States Military Academy’s Department of Systems Engineering at West Point, New York. He received his B.S. in Economics from USMA in 1994, an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 2004, and an M.A. in Education from Stanford University in 2004. As a Military Intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, he has served in a variety of military assignments around the world. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Omega Rho honor societies. He was recently selected to attend the NASA Exploration Systems Summer Research Opportunities Fellowship at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
